Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum (700ml)

The Rum
Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum is a modern masterpiece that reimagines the storied tradition of British Naval rum for the 21st century. Crafted by the experts at Elixir Distillers, this multi layered blend is bottled at a bold 46.2% alc/vol, specifically chosen to carry the weight of its complex tropical esters without the need for chill-filtration or added sugars. Unlike the heavy, caramel-laden “Navy” rums of the past, Finest Caribbean focuses on transparency and the authentic character of the spirit.
The 2025 profile remains true to its meticulous blend composition: 40% 5-year-old Guyanese pot/column still rum for depth, 35% 5-year-old Barbadian rum for elegant fruitiness, 20% unaged Guyanese rum for vibrant honeyed notes, and a crucial 5% 3-year-old high-ester Jamaican pot still rum to provide that signature “funk.” Matured entirely in the tropical heat of the Caribbean in ex-Bourbon casks, this rum offers a sophisticated sipping experience that bridges the gap between traditional molasses richness and bright, modern fruit.
Our Tasting Notes
Nose: Thick and incredibly fruity. Immediate aromas of ripe pineapple and banana fritters mingle with golden syrup and brown sugar. As it opens up, you’ll find subtle layers of polished oak and a touch of chamois leather, lifted by a refreshing hint of honeysuckle and eucalyptus.
Palate: The mouthfeel is rounded and buttery. It begins with vanilla fudge, banana cream, and toffee, before a wave of warming spices—cinnamon and allspice—builds in intensity. Mid-palate, notes of baked apples and dried mango emerge, perfectly balanced by bittersweet dark chocolate and a grind of black pepper.
Finish: Long and evocative. The chocolatey mocha notes slowly fade to reveal roasted Caribbean bananas and a light, lingering tingle of star anise and espresso bean.
The Distillery
While Black Tot is bottled by Elixir Distillers in London, its soul resides in the history of Black Tot Day—July 31, 1970—the day the British Royal Navy ended the 300-year tradition of the daily rum ration. Elixir Distillers famously acquired the final remaining flagons of original naval rum (The Last Consignment) and used that historical DNA to inspire this blend. A unique fact for enthusiasts: the team at Black Tot is obsessed with transparency; they were among the first in the rum world to provide exact blend percentages and age statements for every component, proving that great “Navy” rum doesn’t need to hide behind mystery or molasses colouring.
Overall Review
Black Tot Finest Caribbean is widely celebrated as one of the most versatile and honest rums on the market today. Critics consistently rate it as a “best-in-class” blend that performs equally well as a sophisticated sipper or the backbone of a premium cocktail.
