Kill Devil Aged 14 Years Jamaica Single Cask Rum (700ml)
Volume: 700ml ABV: 67.2% Age: 14 Years Old Country: Jamaica
The Rum
The Kill Devil Jamaica 14 Year Old is a formidable single cask release that captures the raw, high-ester intensity of traditional Jamaican rum. Distilled in May 2007 at the renowned Clarendon Distillery (also known as Monymusk), this spirit was produced using a traditional pot still, ensuring a heavy and aromatic profile. It underwent a dual maturation process, beginning its life in the tropical climate of Jamaica before being shipped to Scotland for further aging in the cool, continental cellars of Hunter Laing. Bottled at a massive 67.2% ABV, this is a true cask strength powerhouse, non-chill filtered and with no added colouring or sugar. This release is extremely rare, with only 256 bottles produced globally.
Our Tasting Notes
The nose is an immediate explosion of “funk” and intensity, leading with aromas of overripe banana, grilled pineapple, and solvent-like glue, followed by savoury notes of olive brine and toasted coconut. On the palate, the sheer power of the 67.2% ABV carries a wealth of flavour, including molasses, dark tobacco, and spiced tropical fruits doused in diesel. The mouthfeel is thick and oily, showcasing a deep herbal complexity and hefty oak tannins from its 14 years in wood. The finish is incredibly long, stinging, and persistent, concluding with notes of burnt brown sugar, black pepper, and a lingering, smoky Jamaican “hogo.”
The Independent Bottler
The Kill Devil series is the dedicated rum label of Hunter Laing & Co., the famed Scottish independent bottler. While they are specialists in single malt Scotch, the team applies the same rigorous selection criteria to their rum stocks. The name “Kill Devil” is a nod to the 17th and 18th century islanders who used the term for their locally made, high proof distillates. By bottling this Jamaican rum at natural cask strength without any additives or filtration, Hunter Laing ensures that the authentic, unadulterated character of the Clarendon pot still is the star of the show.
The Distillery
Clarendon Distillery Limited is one of the pillars of Jamaican rum production, located in the parish of Clarendon. It is famous for its diverse range of marques, from light and floral to the heavy, high-ester styles seen in this bottling. The distillery’s use of long fermentation and traditional copper pot stills results in a spirit that is exceptionally rich in flavour compounds. This 14 year old expression is a perfect example of the distillery’s ability to produce world class, aged rums that are highly prized by collectors and “funk” enthusiasts alike.
